Red Stem Ceanothus - (Ceanothus sanguineus)
The Red Stem Ceanothus is an erect ornamental shrub with a stem that begins green and becomes increasingly red (slightly purplish) with age. This plant, sometimes referred to as a “Wild Lilac”, has a fragrant clustering of delicate white (sometimes pinkish) flowers that blossom from April to June, and attract native bees and butterflies. It can be hard to maintain growing in a pot.
Red Stem Ceanothus is a main food source for various wildlife, and the green deciduous leaves emit a spicy-sweet smell that can be made into a tea. All parts of the plant contain saponin and can be turned into a fragrant “Soapbloom” used as a body wash that removes dirt, but not oils, thus not drying skin.
